When the farmers market outgrew in Marienplatz in 1807, it moved to the closely situated square, where it thrived and extended until today, covering nearly 22,000 sq. m. Viktualienmarkt is a food market established for grocery shopping, consists of 140 indoor and outdoor stalls and shops selling fresh fruits, vegetables, and fancier specialty food items. This market also houses a butchers’ hall, fish hall, bakery, and flower market. Locals, foreigners, and city’s leading culinary experts visit this market to shop for every kitchen item, ranging from fresh-grown vegetables, artisan cheese, meat, seafood, baked goods, and juices.

Called Victuals Market in English, this shopping space is regarded as the best to shop for tasty Bavarian food to enjoy a picnic in the nearby parks. Above the market stands the iconic maypole that has traditionally-dressed figures reflecting the different crafts and activities practiced in this part of the town. You can also grab a beer from the Viktualienmarkt Biergarten and enjoy it under the shade of the chestnut trees.
