Sete Fontes de S. Victor

Monument & Heritage Check location

The Sete Fontes, also known as the Seven Springs, is part of an 18th century water supply system that was built in Braga. This was the only source of water that this city had until the early 20th century. There are really only six springs because one was destroyed in the 19th century.

This water supply system is an advanced aqueduct that was very successful for centuries until it was replaced. The style of this water supply system is very similar to those that were part of ancient Rome. Water was bought before this system was created, but in the 16th century it was determined that this population must have its own water system to sustain the community.

There are also various fountains that were built in addition to the aqueducts and the water successfully worked until the early twentieth century. However, in the mid 1990’s it was determined that another source of water should be established and the Sete Fontes should be put under protection by the historical system.
