Santuário do Bom Jesus do Monte

Located just outside the city of Braga, this sanctuary is the definition of a pilgrimage site, and is made up of a famous Baroque stairway that has the height of 116 meters. This attraction is one of the highlights of Braga architecture. The chapel on the premises was built in 1373 and was renovated in both the 15th and 16th centuries.

The main pilgrimage church was actually built in 1629 and is a dedication to the Passion of the Christ. The current sanctuary that you see was built in the 18th century and was commissioned by the Archbishop of Braga. The main feature of the Sanctuary of Born Jesus is the stairways, and the fact that they are zigzagged and influenced many structures that you will see across Brazil and Portugal.
