In Cabo Espichel it is also possible to visit the Santuário de Nossa Senhora do Cabo, also known as Santuário de Nossa Senhora da Pedra da Mua, which was classified as Property of Public Interest in 1950 and Special Protection Area in 1963.

The architectural complex of the Sanctuary was built on the initiative of D. Pedro II in 1701, due to the large number of devout pilgrims to Santa Maria do Cabo. It is composed by the church (built with backs to the sea), the Houses of Círios or Inns (built on each side of the church to house the pilgrims, which form the “terreiro”), a cruise at the beginning of the Sanctuary, the Hermitage of Memory (a small temple located on the escarpment of Promontório, where the tradition says the apparition of the Virgin was given), the ruins of the House of the Opera, the House of Water and the Aqueduct of Cabo Espichel.

The celebrations commemorating the apparition of the Virgin Mary take place on the last Sunday of September, in this shrine and in the village of Sesimbra, during which the image of the virgin is transported in a parish procession.
