Santuário da Penha

Monument & Heritage Check location

The Santuário da Penha, “Sanctuary of the Rock,” is perched on the Monte da Penha – the highest point for several miles.

Built in 1930 by the architect Marques da Silva, it was constructed almost entirely out of granite from the region with the aim of integrating its design into the surrounding environment. It’s striking modern lines echo the Art Deco aesthetic of the 1930s, clean and futuristic in style.

A fire in 1939 destroyed the Lady of Conception image that formed the main altar and this delayed the construction. Marques da Silva died in July 1947 and the building was opened three months later.

When you visit this unique structure, be sure to note the intricate tiles that decorate the walls and the iconic pulpit in the chapel. After marvelling at the modern church, you can admire the magnificent views of the surrounding countryside.
