Real Jardín Botánico

Green Space Open in this Schedule Check location

More than 5.000 species of live plants and more than 10.000 botanical drawings, this is an impressive Botanical Garden, declared an Artistic Garden in 1942. The public entrance is right next to the Prado Museum.

Founded in 1755 by King Ferdinand VI, it was initially located near Puerta de Hierro but was moved 20 years later to the current location on the Paseo del Prado by King Charles III.

The garden is divided into seven major outdoor sections and five greenhouses, exhibiting plants from tropical, temperate and desert climates. The herbarium is the largest in Spain and it contains specimens collected during scientific expeditions in the 18th and 19th century.

The garden, which opens every day, is currently managed by Spain’s National Scientific Research Council, which means that the scientific study continues and there are many educational activities, including conferences and exhibitions – fulfilling the initial purpose of serving for botany teaching.
