Considered the heart of Barcelona, where neighbourhoods from the old city such as the Barri Gòtic and Raval meet the 19th century Eixample, this large square is also where the famous La Rambla street starts.

The square is rich in art: representative sculptures from Noucentisme, Neo-Classicism and different avant-garde movements and tiles decorating the underground part, designed by students of the Escola Massana.

The six sculptural groups around the plaza represent the four Catalan capital cities, and labour and wisdom as well.

It is surrounded by several buildings, from shopping centres such as El Corte Inglés to luxury hotels or cafés and restaurants where artists and other intellectuals would meet.

The area of 50.000 square meters was urbanized for the first time in 1902 and later modified for the 1929 International Exposition. It was during this period that most bars, restaurants and hotels turned the square into a vibrant place in Barcelona. Nowadays, it is still a favourite meeting point for locals.
