This beloved public park, once belonging to the Spanish Monarchy, is where locals and tourists relax. The beautiful gardens and lake are crowded every day, with families buying balloons for kids, people running, and couples rowing at the lake. Known simply as El Retiro, this is one of Madrid’s best knowns places, especially helpful after hours roaming museums and boulevards.

The park houses several buildings, including the Palacio de Cristal, built in 1887 with a small lake, the Palacio Velázquez, which is now an art gallery, and a promenade known as Paseo de las Estatuas, with two lines of statues dedicated to Spanish kings.

The large artificial lake, known as Estanque, is the highlight of the park, and it’s possible to rent rowboats. Great for families with kids, the Retiro, whose construction started as far as the 16th century, offers funny weekends for children, with puppet theatres and actors dressed as cartoons characters.
