No visit to the Dutch capital is complete without spending a day at the Artis Zoo. Also known as Natura Artis Magistra, this magnificent zoo dates back to 1838 and is the oldest of its kind in all of the Netherlands. It is home to around 700 animal species ranging from zebras, elephants, and giraffes to ostriches and chimpanzees.

Don’t miss the beautiful gardens where hundreds of species of plants and trees can be found. Travelers visiting the zoo with kids can go on a trip through space at the on-site planetarium or discover small organisms at the Micropia which is actually the only microbe museum on Planet Earth.

There is also an on-site Aquarium where visitors can come close to a variety of tropical fish. In case you wish to get something to eat, the café-restaurant de Plantage offers both local and international cuisine.
