Lisbon’s public transport system is a big part of the city’s character and it has gone through many reinventions over the years.

This intriguing museum, set within the civil parish of Alcântara, is dedicated to the history of this public transport in Lisbon. Originally the Santo Amaro Station, the museum is divided into three sections. The displays cover the era of horse-drawn transport, the age of the iconic Lisbon funiculars and the adoption of electric transport and further 20th century developments.

You’ll be able to see examples of the horse drawn trams that were used in Lisbon at the beginning of the century, as well as the models and plans for the funiculars, trams and buses. If you have enjoyed riding around on the brightly painted funiculars or the unique trams of Lisbon, you might find it very interesting to learn about their history at this museum.
