Montserrat

The view from the Benedictine Monk retreat at the Montserrat mountain is absolutely breathtaking.

One of the most popular day trips in Barcelona, Montserrat is a scenic rocky mountain reachable by train (around 1.5 hours), car or bus and from there you may take the cable car or the rack railway (known as “cremallera”), both offering an amazing view over the valley.

Once there, the most adventurous travellers take a hike around the mountains – there are several footpaths and trails, from easy to difficult levels. However, the highlight of this visit is the Santa Maria de Montserrat Abbey, notable for enshrining the image of the Virgin of Montserrat – be aware there are long queues to pay her a visit.

Founded on the 11th century and restored between the 19th and 20th centuries, it is located 48 km west of Barcelona.

This dark gothic structure has a square atrium in the centre with a beautiful marble floor with Latin inscriptions.
