Montjuïc

This hill overlooking the Barcelona harbour, once a strategic defence place for the city, condenses now some of the main attractions of Barcelona.

There are three fun ways to access the hill: the cable car, which takes you to the castle, the Barcelona’s Port cable car, leaving from the Barceloneta to Montjuïc on a 10 minutes ride and finally the funicular, a 5 minutes ride from Paral·lel Station.

Once at the top of the hill, you can start your visit to the Montjuïc Castle, a fortification dated back from 1640, where many prisoners were tortured and imprisoned during the Spanish Civil War.

The castle offers outstanding views over the city. The Joan Miró Foundation offers a unique tour to Miró’s masterpieces, while the Grec Theatre Gardens, a replica of a Greek theatre created for the celebration of the 1929 International Exhibition, is surrounded by beautiful gardens and it is now a stage for cultural events.
Also on the Montjuïc Hill, the municipal pools hosted the water polo events at the 2003 Olympics and attract now many visitors.
