One of the most vibrant places in Barcelona is the Mercado de la Boqueria with butchers houses, cheesemongers, greengrocers, charcuterie shops and small gourmet restaurants serving Spanish and other Mediterranean specialities, some of them to grab and go.

The history of this landmark dates as far as the 13th century, when Pla de la Boqueria had already temporary meat stalls, set up by farmers from villages around Barcelona.

By the 18th century, the butchers were sent to another part of the city to return later on, when the Marquis of Campo Sagrado created the first legislation for the market, boasting the installation of more than 200 stalls, most of them selling salted meat and fish.

By 2003, the famous modernist arch was restored and the place expanded.

Consistently considered one of the best markets in the world, it is opened Monday to Saturday from 8:00 am to 8:30 pm and it includes a classroom on the second floor where workshops and events related to cooking and gastronomy take place.
