Mercadillo el Rastro

Meaning “the trail” in English, the name of this open-air flea market comes from the trail of blood of the animals transported from the slaughterhouses to the tanneries.

Nowadays, this market with more than 400 years is known as one of the best places in Madrid to find clothes, kitchen utensils, furniture, comic books, jewellery – most of the items are antiques or second hand.

Each adjacent street is known by the products sold there: San Cayetano is the painter’s street due to the number of shops that sell artworks, while Fray Ceferino Gonzalez is the “bird street”, where these animals are sold.

For collectable books, visit the Calle Carnero and Calle Carlos Arniches. El Rastro takes place every Sunday and public holidays of the year, from 9:00 am to 3:00 pm, in Barrio de Embajadores, and the busiest hour is at 11:00 am. Like in any other flea market in the world, caution with your belongings is advised.
