The place des Martyrs de la Résistance is located in the historic center next to Les Halles, it features a large fountain, behind which one can see Foch street and the arc de triomphe.

On this square, there is a Gibert Joseph bookstore, the oldest generalist bookshop in Montpellier still in operation, the largest post office in the city and the prefecture where Pétain and General Franco met for the first time during the Second World War.

The prefecture was at that time the meeting place of Petainist leaders, and the place of transit for resistance fighters before they were imprisoned or deported. That is why the name of Place des Martyrs-de-la-Résistance was awarded in their honor after the victory of the allies.
