La Basilica di San Pietro

Monument & Heritage Check location

One of the holiest temples of Christendom, and also the largest church in the world, La Basilica di San Pietro is a major pilgrimage site, where the Pope presides many liturgies throughout the year. The building is the result of the work of masters of Renaissance such as Donato Bramante, Michelangelo, Gian Lorenzo Bernini, and Carlo Maderno.

The construction of the new basilica began in 1506 and was finished only in 1626. It was consecrated that year and named after the saint who became one of the founders of the Catholic Church and was executed and buried where the basilica stands now. Two of the most impressive sculptures inside are Michelangelo’s The Pietà, and the statue of Saint Peter on his throne.

The dome, however, it’s the most well-known feature – rising to a total height of 136.57 meters, it is the tallest dome in the world. The design was started by Michelangelo, continued by Giacomo Della Porta and finally, Carlo Maderno finished it in 1614.
