Igreja de São Marcos

Igreja de São Marcos, also known as St. Mark’s Church, is owned by the Santa Casa da Misericórdia de Braga and it is also the church of the Hospital of S. Marcos. This church was constructed during the 18h century and the commission was given to Carlos Amarante. However, even though the stonework was designed by Carlos Amarante, José Fernandes Grace is responsible for the lateral bodies.

There are many statues present many of them represent famous saints, like St. John the Evangelist, St. Simon, St. James the Greater, St. Bartholomew, St. James the Less, St. Paul. St. Peter. St. Mark, and St. Matthias. This location is also famous because it houses the tomb of St. Mark. This apostle’s body is located in the tomb and his relics are there as well. Many believe that St. Mark is the reason that so many people are drawn to this location and have been for centuries.
