Igreja da Misericórdia de Braga

Monument & Heritage Check location

The Igreja da Misericórdia de Braga is one of the most important renaissance churches in the city of Braga, and this is in spite of renovations that occurred in the 18th and 19th centuries. Although the Igreja da Misericórdia looks like an attachment, it is actually separate from the Sé Cathedral.

This is a temple that was constructed in 1562 and changed a lot in the 18th century. There are a lot of good examples of somber ornamentation, and this is a prime feature of Renaissance architecture. There is an altarpiece in the interior that is in the Baroque style and is a carving on painted wood.

The altar was created by Marcelino de Araújo and occurred between 1734 and 1739. There is also a panel that was painted by Jose Lopes in 1735. There is a religious theme to this piece, however there are also many aristocratic families that are present as well. Our Lady Mercy is also present on the altar, and this was fabricated by sculptor José António Gonçalves in 1774.

Since 1977 that is classified as Property of Public Interest.
