Funicular do Bom Jesus do Monte

Place of Interest Check location

Located in the Santuário do Bom Jesus, the Funicular is known as the Fountain of Tears and is one of the premier places to visit while you are in Braga. The flanks of this mountain are supposed to provide a view of Jesus taking his final steps in the Passion. This location is maintained by the Brotherhood of Bom Jesus do Monte, and connects the shrine to the lower part of the mountain.

This is the oldest funicular in the Iberian Peninsula and boasts the first service in the world to operate a water balance system. The project was designed by a Niklaus Riggenbach, a Swiss engineer, and built between 1840 and 1894. Another exciting part of this location is the invention of the elevator, which is still seen as one of the most influential icons of Portuguese Engineering.
