This imposing fortress was part of military fortifications that were constructed during the 15th and 17th centuries along the Tagus, providing protection from French and English troops as well as roving bands of pirates.

In the 1870s these structures became a summer residence for the Royal Family, who came to this coast to enjoy the medical benefits of the waters.

The main structure was built using ochre stone to match the coastline, so that it was harder to see from the ocean. When the earthquake of 1755 destroyed most of the buildings in the town, the Fortress “Our Lady of the Light” managed to survive and remain mostly intact.

Take a trip to explore this fascinating fortress and get a glimpse into the history of Lisbon.
