Fortaleza de São Filipe

Monument & Heritage Open in this Schedule Check location

Also known as Fortaleza de São Filipe of Setúbal, São Filipe Fortress is located in a high point of the region of Setúbal. It was in the reign of D. Afonso IV and D. Pedro I that the first walled fence was built with the purpose of protecting the village and the fishermen from pirate attacks from North Africa. The fortress was built in the reign of Philip II in 1582, during his visit to Setúbal. Thus, it worked like last redoubt of the Spanish resistance, until the restoration of the Portuguese independence, in 1640.

The fort has a six-pointed star shape, revealing the adaptations to the artillery. Once it is set in a high point, it has an advanced fence that descends even closer to the river.

From the top of the walls you can enjoy the panoramic view of the city, the Sado estuary, the Troia peninsula and the Arrábida mountain range.
