Fortaleza de Santiago

Monument & Heritage Open in this Schedule Check location

Also known as Forte da Marinha and Forte da Praia, the Fortress of Santiago was built between 1642 and 1649, on the beach of Sesimbra, with the purpose of protecting the village and its anchorage against the constant pirate attacks.

With the loss of its defensive role, the Fortaleza received, in 18th century, the military government and served like real residence. In 1879 it was ceded to the Fiscal Guard and in 1886 to the Customs. In 2010, the City Council takes over its management, carrying out restoration work and improvements to recover the true essence of the monument.

Classified as a Property of Public Interest in 1977, Fortaleza houses the House of Command (residence of the Governor of Arms) and the dependencies of the garrison, the Paiol and the Chapel. When visiting Fortaleza, take time to visit the Maritime Museum.
