Farol do Cabo Espichel

Monument & Heritage Open in this Schedule (possibly closed due Covid-19 restrictions) Check location

At the end of Cabo Espichel, the Lighthouse offers a magnificent view of the Atlantic. Built in 1970, it is one of the oldest in the country and one of the thirty still open to the public. Its construction is linked to the project to illuminate the Portuguese coast, which was denominated by the English navigators like “black coast”, in 18th century.

Constructed with a hexagonal structure in white masonry, it was initially fueled by oil and later by fuel. It was only in 1926 that the lighting system was changed to electricity. Today it has a bright range of 26 miles (48km) and is fully automated.
