Citânia de Briteiros

If you like meandering through ancient ruins and letting your mind wander imagining life in another time, then you will be enchanted by this place. Walk through the round houses, roads and walls that are all covered in moss and surrounded by breathtaking valley views.

The Citânia de Briteiros is an Iron Age hill town that is located just outside of Guimarães. It predates the Romans and it really brings home how long ago humans organised settlements on the Iberian Peninsula.

This fascinating historic location is essentially what remains of a prehistoric Celtic town, dating back to the second century BC. Over 1000 people lived here at one point and archeologists have only discovered a fraction of the treasures that lie beneath the soil.

Be sure to check out the exhibition of the artefacts that have been excavated here as well as the ruins of the bath house – which is the best preserved structure of its kind in all of Northern Portugal.
