Castelo de Sesimbra

Monument & Heritage Open in this Schedule (possibly closed due Covid-19 restrictions) Check location

Sesimbra Castle, also known as Castelo dos Mouros (Castle of the Moors), is the oldest fortress in the county. It was classified as a National Monument in 1910. Because of its location on a high point, the castle is one of the main belvederes of the region where you can see the bay, the city and part of the Serra da Arrábida.

This Castle is one of the only located on the seafront that maintains the medieval moth. It is built on the old castle of the Moors that D. Afonso Henriques won in 1165. During the Middle Ages it was the object of numerous enlargements, as a result of its strategic importance in defense of the maritime and terrestrial borders of the kingdom.

Currently managed by Sesimbra City Hall, it hosts various cultural initiatives. Inside, it is possible to visit the Center of Interpretation of the Heritage Rafael Monteiro, as well as the two permanent exhibitions on its history. Inside the Castle, you can also visit the Church of Santa Maria do Castelo.
