Castelo de Palmela

Monument & Heritage Check location

With a magnificent view of the entire region of Arrábida, the Palmela Castle erected by the Moors, was occupied in 1147 by D. Afonso Henriques and definitely conquered in 1205 by D. Sancho I. Whether in the architectural elements or in the ceramic containers found, there are several vestiges of Islamic construction.

With an elevation of 230 meters above sea level, from its Torre de Menagem, on the cleanest days you can see the Portuguese capital (Lisbon).

To the west of the castle is the old convent, built in 1423, which has now been converted into a Pousada. In the Castle, classified as a National Monument in 1910, several archaeological works have been done, transforming some rooms into museological centers, areas of commerce and services.
