Art Museums in the Kunstareal District

Museum Check location

Munich’s famous square Königsplatz was laid out in Neoclassical style in the year 1862 and in the art district near it, you can spot some of the finest art museums than anywhere in Europe. The first sites are the three Pinakothek art galleries: The Old Picture Gallery, also called Alte Pinakothek, with its superb collections of Italian, French, German, Spanish, Dutch, Flemish, and medieval paintings; the New Picture Gallery, or Neue Pinakothek, contains the displays of art ranging from Rococo to Art Nouveau; and the State Gallery of Modern Art (Pinakothek der Moderne) houses the works by Warhol and Picasso.

The other museums in the vicinity are Glyptothek and the State Antiquities Collection having extensive collections of ancient antiquities and figures. The recent addition is an Italian villa called Lenbachhaus which was the house and studio of artist Franz von Lenbach. This villa contains the world’s first compilation of artworks by celebrated artists.
