The 14th century former town hall of Guimarães is perched above an expansive arcaded square, between the rambling Praça de Santiago and Largo da Oliveira.

This stately building was once the Convent of Santa Clara, then was converted into the town hall and also hosted the prison, court and notary at different times throughout its history.

It is now home to the Museum of Primitive Modern Art. It was refurbished in the 17th century by the esteemed Portuguese architect João Lopes de Amorim.

Notice the unique rectangular facade, in which you can recognise two distinct architectural styles. The building’s ground floor is one open porch with Gothic arches and the second floor is enclosed in windows and is crowned with battlements.

In the middle of the windows you can spot the coat of arms of Portugal and the coat of of arms of the Guard. Look closely at the details within the architecture – each decoration and element tells a story about the past of this important national monument.
