Mother Nature was showing off when she created the Azores. This land located in the blue immensity of the Atlantic Ocean is full of natural beauty, ready to be explored. The Azores are a group of nine islands and are an autonomous region of Portugal. The Azores have long been “hidden”, 900 miles west of the Iberian Peninsula. Though rather closer to home than the gold slivers of the Caribbean, they were overlooked until the 14th century and uninhabited until the 15th century, claimed by Portuguese settlers in 1432, only 60 years before Columbus stumbled on the New World.

The Azores peaks that are found on these islands are in fact some of the world’s tallest mountains, reaching from deep beneath the Atlantic. This once-uninhabited volcanic archipelago now invites thousands of tourists to its islands every year in search of sun, sand and gorgeous scenery. To the east the traveller will find the island of Santa Maria which offers warm white sandy beaches and vineyards that cover the slopes of the island. São Miguel is the largest island in the Azores and is home to volcanic lakes, hot thermal waters, waterfalls, lagoons and breath-taking scenery.

São Miguel, commonly known as “The Green Island” hosts a variety of landscapes that includes beaches, hills, beautiful lakes and vast green plains, making it an island with an offer for all types of travellers. As São Miguel is the largest of the islands of the Azores archipelago, it is also the most populated island and the island that has the most to offer. Its cosmopolitan town of Ponta Delgada offers a historical backdrop with contemporary comforts such as shopping, bars, restaurants, night-clubs and ocean view cafes. While you enjoy the comforts of contemporary life you are able to appreciate São Miguel’s history where you are by surrounded monuments, turn of the century architecture, parks and cobble stone streets.

São Miguel offers a variety of activities to suit every traveller. For the adventurous individuals and couples there is diving, trekking, swimming with dolphins, jeep safaris and for the traveller who enjoys the less adventurous route there is whale watching, walking, fishing, bird watching, snorkelling, swimming and golf. Its award winning Terra Nostra Park is a must see by all who visit this beautiful island.

The best time to visit São Miguel is during June to October, with July to September being their hottest months. A visit to this island during November to January is always lovely however temperatures can dip during this time. São Miguel’s rainiest period occurs from February through to May.

Gastronomy

Cozido das Furnas

Cozido das Furnas

The Cozido das Furnas is one of the most emblematic dishes of the São Miguel Island, being cooked in the natural boilers of Lagoa das Furnas. For its confection, the various ingredients (beef, pork and chicken, vegetables, potatoes and sausages) are placed in a pan in alternating layers, which is then buried in the soil near the boilers and covered with a wooden lid and then with earth. This stew takes between 5 to 8 hours to be cooked, taking advantage of the natural heat emanated by the volcanic activity, which is around 85ºC. This natural process of slow cooking, repeated for tens of years, maintains the flavor of the food and imparts a soft texture to the meat. If you are visiting São Miguel, experiencing this stew is undoubtedly an experience not to be missed.

Fish and Seafood

Fish and Seafood

In the Azores gastronomy, we find some species of fish and seafood that are unique in Portugal. Fish such as tuna, mackerel, clownfish, snapper and swordfish are the most traditional Azorean cuisine. They are presented grilled, fried, stewed, roasted, in fish stew or fish broths, always distinguished by its freshness. The tuna, in these waters, is still caught with line and hook, and has a pink color, with a soft flavor and textures. In seafood, species such as lobster, crab or “cavaco” (kind of lobster) are the most delicious, to which are added some crustaceans such as limpets and “cracas”, the later cooked in sea water. The Lapas com Molho Afonso is part of the list of typical Azores dishes. They are cooked with onion, garlic, parsley, olive oil, peppers and salt, being made and appreciated in all the Azores islands.

Queijos da Ilha

Queijos da Ilha

The Azores cheeses, known as Queijo da Ilha, are made with the best milk from the Azores and produced by hand. Recognized nationally and internationally, the most outstanding are the cured cheese, buttery cheese and spicy cheese. One of the most famous cheeses is S. Jorge – a cured cheese with a firm and hard consistency, yellowish, with small and irregular holes and a slightly spicy flavor that becomes more intense with aging. The bark has a dark yellow color and sometimes with reddish spots. This is a cheese produced exclusively on the São Jorge Island, which is certified as the Demarcated Region of São Jorge Cheese and regulated as Denomination of Protected Origin (PDO). Also important in São Miguel is the Queijo das Furnas, or Queijo do Vale, produced in an artisan way and whose ingredients are the milk and the sour mineral water of the Furnas valley. This cheese is available in five varieties – half cure, buttery, with oregano, thyme and garlic, in the formats of 250 grams, 500 grams and 1 kilogram.

Jams

Jams

The Quintal dos Açores Jams are the most famous of the archipelago, made in a small family company installed in Candelaria, on the São Miguel Island. Still using homemade recipes that have been in the family for decades, the jams are made with regional raw materials, always with passion and affection, respecting the culture, the ancestors and the nature. Pumpkin, Blackberry, Pineapple, Chila, Guava, Gooseberry and Capucho are just some of the many flavors of Quintal dos Açores Jams that you can find and taste.

Tea

Tea

Among the various cultures introduced in the Azores, tea is one of the most important. The Gorreana and Porto Formoso plantations are unique in the European context, located on the São Miguel Island. Tea – green or black – is planted on the slopes of the island, not using any herbicides, pesticides, fungicides, dyes or preservatives. This 100% organic product is one of the Azores’ favorite souvenirs to take home. In addition, you can also visit the museum factories, where you can see the history of cultivation and the evolution of the machinery used, and where you can taste this Azorean tea.

People

Hintze Ribeiro (1849-1907)

Hintze Ribeiro (1849-1907)

Ernesto Rodolfo Hintze Ribeiro was a Portuguese politician and statesman who was born in Ponta Delgada, on the São Miguel Island, Azores, in 1849. At the age of 22, he graduated in Law from the University of Coimbra, having practiced law in his homeland between 1872 and 1877, the year he leaves for Lisbon to join the Regenerating Party. In representation of São Miguel, he was very active in his parliamentary and opposition tasks, presenting numerous proposals in favor of his homeland. In addition to being a leader of the Regenerating Party, he was also the Attorney General of the Crown, Minister of Public Works, Finance and Foreign Affairs. He has taken office as President of the Council (equivalent to the current Prime Minister) three times, having been one of the main ministers in the final phase of the Constitutional Monarchy. Hintze Ribeiro was a serious man, of austere life and great correction. Always faithful to the Monarchy, the basic idea of his political activity, was considered the greatest tribute of his time. By irony of fate, in August 1907 he died in the cemetery of Alto de S. João in Lisbon, while accompanying the funeral of a friend.

Teófilo Braga (1843-1924)

Teófilo Braga (1843-1924)

Politician, teacher and writer, Joaquim Teófilo Fernandes Braga was born in Ponta Delgada in 1843. Graduated in Law from the University of Coimbra, he made his debut in literature in 1859 with the publication of Folhas Verdes. In 1868 he moved to Lisbon, where he began his activity as a lawyer and where he taught literature at the Faculty of Letters of the University of Lisbon. Throughout his life, he wrote works of literary history, ethnography, poetry, fiction, and philosophy. Strongly influenced by the sociological and political theses of Positivism, he was known to have been the introducer of Positivism in Portugal. In 1878 he founded and directed the magazine O Positivismo, having since that year held several prominent positions in the structures of the Portuguese Republican Party. Teófilo Braga made his last participation in the active political life in the presidency of the Provisional Government of the Portuguese Republic, where he exerted for a short time the position of President of the Republic, replacing Manuel de Arriaga. After the death of his sons and his wife, and after his term of office, he isolated himself in his library in Lisbon, where he would die alone in January 1924.

Antero de Quental (1842-1891)

Antero de Quental (1842-1891)

Born in April 1842 in Ponta Delgada, Azores, Antero Tarquínio de Quental was a Portuguese writer and poet who dedicated his life to poetry, philosophy and politics, and who from an early age was distinguished by his revolutionary opinions and his spirit fighter. At the age of 16 he moved to Coimbra where he studied Law and shared his first socialist ideas, and where he founded the Sociedade do Raio whose main objective was to renew the country through literature. The poetry of Antero de Quental presents three distinct phases, namely that of youthful experiences, that of militant poetry, and the phase of poetry of metaphysical tone, more focused on the expression of anguish. Throughout his life, some of his main works were the Odes Modernas, in 1865 and reedited in 1875; and Sonetos Completos, considered by the critics as his best poetic work. In politics, in Lisbon, Antero de Quental was one of the founders of the Portuguese Socialist Party. A bipolar disorder sufferer and in a state of permanent depression, in 1891 he returned to Ponta Delgada, where he committed suicide that same year, on a garden bench next to the Convento de Nossa Senhora da Esperança, in Campo de São Francisco. In the place, the word “Esperança” (Hope) can still be read on the wall. His remains are in Ponta Delgada, buried in the Cemetery of São Joaquim.
