Called in the Roman period “Portus Cale”, it was the city of Oporto that originated the name to Portugal and where the country was formed. At the time, the city of Oporto was only a small wall, where the Sé Cathedral is currently in. As the city grew, a new wall was built-up, named “muralhas fernandinas”, which still have some archeological remains that is possible to visit even today.

Porto city is also known as “Invicta Cidade do Porto” which means “unvanquished city”. This denomination was assigned by D. Maria II in the 19th century after the Civil War (1832-34). The city residents supported the siege of D. Miguel troops – the famous “Cerco do Porto” – defending the city and assuring the victory of the liberals, led by D. Pedro. In recognition of the dedication, courage, sacrifice and effort of the Oporto people, D. Pedro IV literally offered his heart to the city, which is deposited in the Church of Lapa.

One of the most characteristic expressions of the city is "Porto is a Nation", which shows the affection of the people of Porto for its city.

Known for their strong and honest character, the Porto people are hospitable and cheerful. His festive side is evident in the night of S. João, from 23 to 24th of June, in which the population goes out to the streets with leeks and plastic hammers.

The festivals multiplied in to the city and in every street you can smell the grilled sardines. Hot air balloons of paper are thrown up into the sky, there are firework and the party only ends at dawn.

Oporto is a city with history, but modern too. In 1996 UNESCO conferred to Oporto the status of "World Heritage City" and in 2001 was the European Capital of Culture.

Porto is currently the capital of the Metropolitan Area and the second largest urban area in Portugal.

Port Wine

Recognized worldwide, the wine inherited the city name – Port Wine.

It is produced from the grapes that grow in the Douro Valley vineyards, classified as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 2001.

The best combination between the harvest traditions and the elegance of our wines offer you the possibility to taste the young and precious rubies, the old and oaked tawnies and you cannot miss the wonders of a vintage port.

After the first winter the wines are transported to Vila Nova de Gaia where they will stay aging until its finest. Back in the days these trips were made by the Rabelo boats that you can still see anchored in the river banks.

The history of the city and wine will forever be related. There is no better way to enjoy the amazing city view other than with a Porto Wine glass!

Gastronomy

Francesinha

Francesinha

Francesinha was born in the 60’s by an emigrant from France, who decided to take a typical French dish called “croque-monsieur” and adapt it to our ingredients and our culture, adding what is considered the most important element: hot sauce, slightly thick and spicy. This dish began to be made in the restaurant “A Regaleira” by Daniel David Silva and consists of meats such as steak, smoked meats and others, between two slices of bread covered with cheese and surrounded by french fries, all soaked in the special spicy sauce. At the moment it is possible to find a great variety of francesinhas: with shrimp, with mushrooms, vegetarian or made in wood oven.

Codfish

Codfish

Cod is one of the most consumed and appreciated foods of the Portuguese people. Motivated by the need to find products that resisted long sea crossings, during the Discoveries in the 15th century, the Portuguese found this fish in the seas of Newfoundland (Canada), and quickly introduced it into national eating habits, cooking it from “a thousand and one ways “. Since then it has been considered the “faithful friend” of Portugal. Cod dishes are present at the table across the country, but several of them have recipes born in the north. This is the case of Bacalhau à Gomes de Sá, Bacalhau à Zé do Pipo, Bacalhau à Minhota, Bacalhau à Narcisa and many others. A common feature in all recipes is Portuguese olive oil.

Fish & Seafood

Fish & Seafood

Being Portugal considered “a country nearby the sea”, the fresh fish could not be lacking in the table of the Portuguese, and of the Porto region in particular. Taking advantage of the proximity of Docapesca in Matosinhos, all the restaurants present options of fresh fish made in the most varied forms. The most popular are the grilled fish, to highlight the Golden, the Sea Bass and the Sardine. However, the rivers also play a decisive role in the northern gastronomy, since Trout, Lamprey and Shad, which delight the lovers. Seafood also takes on high value, namely shrimp, barnacles, clams, lobster and crab.

Tripas à Moda do Porto

Tripas à Moda do Porto

The time of the discoveries had an important role in the construction of the local gastronomic identity. When in 1415, at the beginning of the Portuguese Discoveries, under the command of Infante D. Henrique, the Navigator, a fleet set out to explore the African coast, the population of Porto offered all the meat available to the sailors, leaving only what such as guts. With them they have finished making a delicious dish that is now mandatory in any restaurant – the “Tripas à Moda do Porto”. For this reason, the people of Porto are known as “tripeiros”.

Traditional Sweets

Traditional Sweets

It is in Porto that the Pão-de-ló finds more expressiveness. It is a cute and light cake, made with eggs, sugar and flour, which is eaten all year round, but with higher consumption at Easter and at Christmas. It is a good accompaniment for Port wine. Even in the center of the city of Porto are famous the Trouxas-de-ovos of the Avé Maria Convent, which gave way to the São Bento station. Other options include burnt creamed milk, bacon, or sweet rice and noodles. The egg pudding and port wine is also one of the many typical sweets that are part of the Porto gastronomy. Other options include the crème brulée, the sweet rice and sweet noodles.

Portuguese Sausages & Cheeses

Portuguese Sausages & Cheeses

Cheeses and sausages are not on the list of healthy foods, but should be tasted without remorse as they provide a unique dining experience. The cheeses are mostly made with sheep’s milk and goat’s milk or a mixture of the two, and still others with cow’s milk. In the north of Portugal, the most traditional is the Queijo da Serra, the Queijo de Cabra Transmontano, also worth mentioning the fresh cheese and the curd cheese. As far as sausages are concerned, there are several traditional tasting options, some of which are farinheira, morcela, salpicão, linguiça or alheira. The alheira is one of the most appreciated product, and has the peculiarity of not being made with pork, since originally it was destined to the Jewish population that habited here in the Middle Age.

Arq. Souto Moura (1952)

Arq. Souto Moura (1952)

Eduardo Elísio Machado Souto de Moura it’s one of the best known and awarded contemporary architects in Portugal. Born in Oporto on the 25th July of 1952, he worked with Alvaro Siza Vieira, but early created his own workspace. Souto Moura was influenced by the conductor horizontal lines of Mies Van der Rohe, and this can be seen on his house projects, his largest collection. It`s one of the highest ends of the School of Porto, winner of the Pritzker Prize in 2011. In 1981, newly graduated from the College of Fine Arts in Porto, he surprised the community of architects winning the competition for the main project of the Cultural Center of the Ministry of Culture in Porto (1981-1991). This made him one of most important architects of the new European generation. His international recognition would strengthen by the conquest of the first place in the competition of design projects for a hotel in the historical area of Salzburg, in Austria, in 1987. Some of his works include the Trindade Station of the Oporto Metro or the Municipal Stadium of Braga.

Arq. Siza Vieira (1933)

Arq. Siza Vieira (1933)

Alvaro Joaquim de Melo Siza Vieira, best known simply as Siza Vieira, it’s one of the best known and awarded contemporary architects in Portugal. Born in Matosinhos, Siza Vieira studied between 1949 and 1955 in the “Escola Superior de Belas Artes” in Porto, where he lectured from 1966 to 1969, coming back in 1976. Strongly influenced by the work of Adolf Loos, Frank Lloyd Wright and Alvar Aalto, early he was able to develop his own language, based not only on the international modern references, but on the constructive Portuguese tradition as well. This resulted on refinement and unmatched detail on Portuguese modern era, where we can highlight the Casa de Chá da Boa Nova, in Leça da Palmeira. Siza Vieira created true landmarks in Portuguese and international architecture’s history, influencing many generations of coming architects. Refer to Piscinas de Marés, Museum of Serralves, Marco de Canaveses Church, or more recently Iberê Camargo Foundation in Porto Alegre Brazil, where he comes back to one of his strongest influences of architectural languages, “Le Corbusier”. This is his major talent, being able to reinterpret or even redesign. With this, he seeks for a language with a formal complexity allied with a drawing simplicity. His works can be found all over the world, from America to Asia, passing by countries like Portugal, Spain, Netherlands, Belgium, Brasil, South Korea, between others. Siza was as well a professor in “Ecole Politecnique Federal de Lausanne”, Pensilvania University, “Universidad de Los Andes” in Bogotá and Harvard University. He received the Doutor Honoris Causa in 2010 by the Technical University of Lisbon.

Júlio Resende (1917-2011)

Júlio Resende (1917-2011)

Julio Resende is a famous Portuguese artist (Porto, 23 October 1917). He attended the School of Fine Arts of Porto and Paris. He graduated in painting in 1945 at the School of Fine Arts in Porto, where he was a disciple of Dórdio Gomes. His early paintings were focused on Alentejo, a region in southern Portugal. This topic was recovered after 1949 with greater accuracy and higher density of plastic, returning from a trip to Europe that led him to meet Francisco Goya and Pablo Picasso. In Back to Work (1950) and Women and Fishermen (1951), Resende`s paintings, are still present topics from neo-realism. However it does not prevail in the pictorial, multi-layered and rhythmic space, referring to a greater abstraction. He made several individual exhibitions in Portugal, Spain, Belgium, Norway and Brazil. Also represented our country in collective exhibitions in Biennials of S. Paulo, Venice, Ohio, London, Paris. In the ’60s, Resende became interested in interior design and architectural projects, collaborating on the decoration of the Palace of Justice in Lisbon and performing the panel of the headquarters of Banco de Portugal. The panel Ribeira Negra, executed in 1968 ordered by the Municipality of Porto, is seen as the best contemporary ceramic panel. In Sete-Rios, a Lisbon subway station, he develops the memory of the lush landscapes brought from Brazil. As an illustrator, collaborated with several authors, such as Eugenio de Andrade on That Cloud and others, Sophia de Mello Breyner Andresen on Christmas Eve, The Bronze Boy and The First Book of Poetry, and Ilse Losa on The King and Rique and Other Stories. Besides painting, Resende was dedicated to ceramics, performing panels with several architects; serigraphs and etchings are some of his collaborations in the graphic work area; as well as book illustration, sets and costumes for theater and ballet. He is represented in several Museums in Portugal, Brazil, Finland, Norway, Belgium, France and Macau.

Sophia de Mello Breyner (1919-2004)

Sophia de Mello Breyner (1919-2004)

Portuguese poetess and storyteller, was born in Porto in 1919, at the womb of an aristocratic family, where she lived until the age of ten, time when she moved to Lisbon. With Danish origin from the father’s side, her education was held on a catholic environment and culturally privileged, which influenced her personality. Her literary activity (and political) were always based on ideas of justice, freedom and moral integrity. The clearance, balance and purity in her poetic language, the constant presence of nature, the permanent attention to problems and tragic elements of human life, are a reflexion of a classic education, with readings such as Homero. During youth, collaborated in magazines such as Cadernos de Poesia (1940), Távola redonda (1950), Árvore (1951) and had proximity with important literary names like Miguel Torga, Ruy Cinatti and Jorge de Sena. Partner and founder of the “National Comity for help to the political persecuted”, and her civic intervention was constant, even after April’s revolution of 1974. Presided the National Center of Culture and the General Assembly of Portuguese Writers. The poetic language of Sophia de Mello Breyner notes, beyond the solid classic culture of the author and her passion for Greek culture, the purity and the transparency of word in her relation of language with things. It shows the luminosity of the world, where the intellect and rhythm are in harmony with the melodic and perfect shape of her poems. Light, verticality and magic are always present on Sophia’s works, on the poetic pieces and on the important works for children, which initially were destined to her five sons and daughters, and rapidly became classics for children’s literature in Portugal, marking successive generations of young readers, with titles such as “O Rapaz de bronze”, a” A Fada Oriana” or “A Menina do Mar”.

Silva Porto (1850-1893)

Silva Porto (1850-1893)

António Carvalho da Silva was born in the oldest quarter of Porto, at the parish of Sé on the 11th November 1850. It is said that due to its patriotism, adopted to himself the surname “Porto”. Major Portuguese figure for naturalistic painting of the XIX century, he left us great works where man and nature find each other in harmony, with a relationship marked by sentimentalism and abidance to the country side’s reality. In 1865, Silva Porto enrolled on Porto’s Fine arts academy, where he had Thadeo d’Almeida Furtado and João Correia as painting masters. Influenced by Bárbizon’s School, this painter is responsible, like Marques de Oliveira, for the introduction in Portugal of the “free air Painting”. This fact led to the renovation of the Portuguese painting in the last quarter of the XIX’s century. Coming back to his home country, was designated professor of landscape in the fine arts academy of Lisbon, and forms the renowned “Lion’s Group”: a group of artists and literary men, committed to the disclosure and consolidation of the new aesthetics of naturalism, an activity that marked the whole 80s with a series of exhibitions. Part of this group was painters like Columbano, José Malhoa, António Ramalho and João Vaz, represented in the collection of the Nacional Museum of Soares dos Reis. With a reduced number of works, Silva Porto is one of the authors with bigger representation in the Museum. From that period, this Museum only has “Um Campo de trigo – Seara”. In Porto, at the Paranhos parish, exists a street named after him and at the Garden of Saint Lazarus there is a statue of Silva Porto made by the sculptor Barata Feyo. In Lisbon, at the Benfica parish, there is a park named in his honour, today known as “Mata de Benfica”, where a statue was made by the sculptor Costa Motta Sobrinho.

Almeida Garrett (1799-1854)

Almeida Garrett (1799-1854)

João Batista da Silva Leitão, later Almeida Garrett, was born in Porto in 1799, at a House on the old part of “Ribeira”, and died in 1854 in Lisbon. It’s certainly the most complete Portuguese writer of the entire 19th century, since he left us with master pieces in poetry, theater and prose, innovating the writing and composition on each of the literary gender. Almeida Garrett established the foundations of the modern Portuguese novels, which stands out with the popular forms of expression, the creation of virtual dialogues with the reader, the elevation of freedom and patriotism, or the denunciation of social issues. He was deputy, minister and diplomat, agitated the parliament with speeches about freedom of press, collaborating with various journals and magazines, where he revealed his positions relative to the social-political and cultural reform of Portugal. He exercised diplomacy in London, Paris and Brussels. After the September revolution (1836), he was a General inspector for theaters and founded the dramatic art conservatory and the National Theater. With Cabral’s dictatorship (1942) Garrett is marginalized from politics and initiates the most inspired period of his literary production. During the regeneration (1851), receives the “Visconde” title and is designated Minister of foreign affairs.

D. Pedro IV (1798-1834)

D. Pedro IV (1798-1834)

D. Pedro IV was one of the great leaders of the country. As a young man he gave independence to Brazil with the famous cry of Ipiranga. Later, he came to fight in Portugal against his brother D. Miguel as the leader of the Liberal forces. He reached Oporto from the Azores. The forces of D. Michael lay siege to Oporto and found the Portuenses and Liberals ready to fight. It’s almost a miracle how many times Miguelina’s forces were repulsed by an army as fatigued and hungry. The Liberals won in Oporto and took Lisbon by assault. In recognition of the value of the Portuenses for the war effort and for repelling several attacks in the siege, Queen Mary II (daughter of Peter IV) gave Oporto the title Invicta (e.g. Ancient, Noble, Always Loyal and Invicta).

Nicolau Nasoni (1691-1773)

Nicolau Nasoni (1691-1773)

Nicolau Nasoni was an Italian decorator and architect who arrived in the city of Oporto in 1725 and is responsible for several works in the city. Among them are the baroque apintings and the north façade in the Sé Cathedral as well as the São Miguel Fountain lacated also near the Sé Cathedral; The Freixo Palace and the Clérigos Tower. The latter is considered the main work of Nicolau Nasoni, to whom he dedicated 30 years of free work. In August of 1773 he died in the poverty and is believed to have been buried precisely in the crypt of the Clérigos Church.
