Classified in 2001 as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO, Guimarães is a Portuguese historical city with an important role in the formation of Portugal. With more than a millennium of history since its formation, when it was designated Vimaranes, the city is associated with the foundation of Portuguese nationality and identity.

Its formation began in 10 th century, when the Countess Mumadona Dias had built the Santa Maria Monastery. In order to protect the monks and the populations who lived there from the attacks of the Moors, the need arose to erect a fortress, thus arising the Castle of Guimarães.

The extensive history of this city is reflected in the huge variety of national landmarks and historic buildings that are found here. The Castle is one of the most prominent landmarks and is today one of the most symbolic and important monuments in national history. It was here that in 1110 D. Afonso Henriques was born, who became the first king of Portugal.

Because it was here that the administrative center of the Condado Portucalense was established by D. Henrique and later, in 1143, by his son D. Afonso Henriques, and also because it was in this place that the most striking events that led to the independence of Portugal, Guimarães became known as the "Berço de Portugal" (Cradle of Portugal). For this reason, it can be read in one of the towers of the old wall "Aqui Nasceu Portugal" (Here was born Portugal).

Culture

Ranked European Capital of Culture in 2012, Guimarães is a city with much to discover. Located just 50 km from the Porto city, there are more than enough delightful and fascinating historical sites to keep you occupied every day. If you just want to relax and wander, the historic center has many quiet cafes and lovely squares to sit and watch the world go by.

Architecture for Admiring
The charming town center is filled with traditional houses, scenic squares and elegant gothic buildings, with graceful iron balconies and intricately carved granite balconies. The types of buildings you see here are an excellent example of the specific style of Portuguese architecture that prevailed in the 15th and 19th centuries.

An Inspiring View
The most spectacular view of the city is from nearby Monte da Penha, where you can admire the breathtaking landscapes of northern Portugal. This belvedere is a very popular leisure area and a prime location for picnics. Also, outside the city center you can stroll through the gardens of Palácio de Vila Flor and visit the Baroque Igreja de Nossa Senhora da Consolação e dos Santos Passos.

Festivities
Guimarães is a tourist destination with a rich and varied offer, where traditions are kept alive. In a perfect union between the sacred and the profane, the festivals and pilgrimages are a real invitation to meet and live among cheerful people. Among the most symbolic and important festivities are the Festivities Gualterianas, the Nicolinas Festivals, the Santa Luzia Festivity and the Great Pilgrimage of São Torcato.

The Gualterianas celebrations, in honor of São Gualter, take place in the first weekend of August and are marked by the Procession of the Flax and the Battle of the flowers, ending with the Gualteriana March.

The Nicolinas Festivals are the festivities of the students of Guimarães, in honor of São Nicolau de Mira. Between November 29th and December 7th, they are composed of several parts: the Pine and the Nicolinas Suppers, the “Novenas”, the Possessions, the Vimaranense Academic Preacher, the Little Apples, the São Nicolau Dances, the “Saudade” Ball and the “Roubalheira”. Pinol and the Nicolinas Suppers are the most important part and with more participants, after a dinner in the restaurants of the city, the actors parade through the streets chanting the Nicolini Ringtones to the sound of drums and boxes.

The Santa Luzia Festivity takes place on December 13 next to the Santa Luzia Chapel. Associated with this festivity is the traditional sale of cakes called Sardão and Passarinhas. According to tradition, the boys must offer the Sardão to the girl, who, being interested in dating, should repay her with a Passarinha.

The Great Pilgrimage of São Torcato occurs in the village of São Torcato in July, and is considered the largest pilgrimage of Minho. With four days of festivities, traditional minhoto folklore assumes important expression.

Gastronomy

Codfish

Codfish

The cod dishes are present at the table of the whole country. In the north of Portugal, and in Guimarães in particular, in addition to Bacalhau à Minhota, the most characteristic are Cod in the Oven and Cod Stuffed. A common feature in all recipes is Portuguese olive oil.

Cabrito Assado no Forno

Cabrito Assado no Forno

One of the most elaborated recipes, both at Easter and at the main festivals and pilgrimages, is the Cabrito Assado, accompanied by the typical oven rice. Each family has its recipe, however, the most traditional, is made in a wood oven and crockery. The kid is prepared with a mixture of garlic, parsley, bay leaf, lemon, salt and paprika, and may in some cases be washed with white wine, and rest. Some families also take advantage of the kids to accompany the rice in the oven, to give it the kid’s taste.

Rojões à Moda do Minho

Rojões à Moda do Minho

As the name implies, Rojões à moda do Minho is a typical dish from the Minho region of northern Portugal. Given the variety of ingredients, it is a dish with a great mix of flavors. This dish consists of several ingredients including pork cut into cubes, floured casings, blood sausage with onion, liver and pork blood. To accompany, the most traditional is the “arroz de sarrabulho” or the “papas de sarrabulho” and the potato chips. Alternatively, it can be accompanied with white rice.

Traditional Sweets

Traditional Sweets

The female convent from which Guimarães has developed has had a lot of influence in the gastronomy of the region, especially at the level of sweets. Examples of this are the Tortas de Guimarães and the Toucinho do Céu. These candies from the convent tradition have come to us through sweets that passed on their knowledge of generation in generation. The tortas de Guimarães, shaped like a shell, are made with puff pastry and have a filling of egg yolks, almonds and sweet chila. The Toucinho do Céu is made from sugar in pearl point, almonds and a lot of gems. The name Toucinho do Céu is due to the fact that, in addition to being raised in the convents, the original recipe to have lard of pork in the ingredients.

After the death of his father in 1112, he took a political position contrary to that of his mother, D. Teresa. In 1128, after winning the Battle of S. Mamede against the forces of his mother, he took over the leadership of the Condado Portucalense, continuing later to conquer territories to the Muslims, who occupied great part of the Iberian Peninsula. In 1140, after winning the battle of Ourique, proclaimed king of Portugal. This title was recognized, in 1179, by the one for Alexander III, thus also being recognized the independence of Portugal.
