Braga is a Northern city of Portugal, founded in 16 B.C. in Ancient Rome and which was designated as Bracara Augusta in honor of the Roman Emperor Augustus. This is a time of great development for the city because of the Roman influence and at the end of the 3rd century there was a new capital created in the province of Gallaecia which was named Conventus bracarensis.

During the Middle Ages there was an invasion of Germans into the Iberian Peninsula, and once again Bracara being the capital, remained there until the 6th century. During this time Braga was important in the Christianization of this country, and Muslim conquest of Iberia was dissuaded and declined. Following this victory for Christianity, this city became the seat of the court of Portugal. A cathedral was established and archbishopric seat was maintained in this medieval city. Braga next found success in the 18th century when rejuvenation occurred in the city. There was a large movement to modernize and a renaissance period with art, architecture, and education.

The denomination Braga will have arisen in the 11th century when the city is reorganized and the city wall and the Cathedral is constructed.

This city is in the heart of Minho and is in the middle of all kinds of different geographical landmarks. There are mountains, valleys, plains, and forests. There are many rivers that run through the area, but the main river to the north is the Cávado River. This area has a Mediterranean climate and has hotter summers than most areas of the Iberian Peninsula. Braga is divided into 23 civil parishes and 37 municipal parishes.

Well known for many different historical features, there are many archeological finds in Braga. There are Roman Milestones and the Roman Thermal of Maximinus. There are also many architectural pieces like the Arch of Porta Nova, Fountain of the Idol, Fountain of the Iron Waters, Palace of Falcões, and the Hospital of São Marcos. These are only a few of the many attractions that exist within Braga. There are also many beautiful churches like the Chapel of the Coimbras, Church of Santa Maria, and the Church of Santa Cruz just to name a few. Anyone traveling to this area will be able to experience centuries of historical influences in the form of art, architecture, and cultural attractions.

Faith

The city of Braga is one of the oldest and most beautiful in Portugal, and is also one of the most important religious centers in the country. The religious heritage around every corner and its historic streets testify to religious devotion throughout the centuries, being visible in the various monuments that enrich the city, with particular emphasis on the Cathedral which is the oldest in Portugal (commissioned to build In the 12th century by D. Henrique and D. Teresa, the parents of D. Afonso Henriques, and that there are their tombs).

Braga is nowadays known as the "Portuguese Rome", due to its concentration of religious architecture. The Bom Jesus, Sameiro and Falperra sanctuaries are obligatory visits, filling the region with faithfuls and pilgrims. Braga is thus considered the largest religious center in the country, where the Holy Week and Saint John Festivities take on special relevance.

During the Holy Week Festivities, at Easter, many tourists and pilgrims are attracted to the city of Braga. Invoking the passion of Christ, there are many processions throughout the week and the altars of the churches invoke, each one, a scene.

In the celebrations of S. João, in the night of 23 to 24 June, excursions arrive from all over the country to participate in the festivities. Lots of music, artistic lighting, dances and traditional songs invade the streets of the city.

Braga is also known as the "City of Archbishops". In addition to being the seat of an archdiocese since the 11th century, this nickname is due to the fact that the holders of this ecclesiastical title had been lords of the city during almost seven centuries (between 1112 and 1792). In addition to the mission as clerics, they also held the administration of the city and neighboring territories, having the power to levy taxes and impose laws, exempting the city from the power of the king.

The Gallery of Archbishops can be visited in the old Curia building, in the gardens of the Archbishop’s Palace.

Gastronomy

Bacalhau à Braga

Bacalhau à Braga

Also known as Bacalhau à Narcisa or Bacalhau à Minhota, Bacalhau à Braga is one of the great ambassadors of the city. It was born in a small tavern of the same name (opened in 1930, but currently closed), but has since acquired fame and been adopted by other restaurants that have made this dish one of the references of Minho gastronomy. This dish consists of fried cod, accompanied by potatoes and onions, cut into thin slices and fried in the same cod oil, with bay leaf and cloves, and washed with red or white wine.

Cabrito Assado

Cabrito Assado

One of the most elaborated recipes, both at Easter and at the main festivals and pilgrimages, is the Cabrito Assado, accompanied by the typical oven rice. Each family has its recipe, however, the most traditional, is made in a wood oven and crockery. The kid is prepared with a mixture of garlic, parsley, bay leaf, lemon, salt and paprika, and may in some cases be washed with white wine, and rest. Some families also take advantage of the kids to accompany the rice in the oven, to give it the kid’s taste.

Rojões à moda do Minho

Rojões à moda do Minho

As the name implies, Rojões à moda do Minho is a typical dish from the Minho region of northern Portugal. Given the variety of ingredients, it is a dish with a great mix of flavors. This dish consists of several ingredients including pork cut into cubes, floured casings, blood sausage with onion, liver and pork blood. To accompany, the most traditional is the “arroz de sarrabulho” or the “papas de sarrabulho” and the potato chips. Alternatively, it can be accompanied with white rice.

Caldo Verde

Caldo Verde

Elected one of the 7 Wonders of the Gastronomy of Portugal, the Caldo Verde, is the typical soup of the North of Portugal, more concretely of the Minho. It consists of a potato broth and cabbage cut into very thin strips. This soup should be served with at least one slice of chorizo and one strand of olive oil, accompanied by a slice of Corn Bread.

Traditional Sweets

Traditional Sweets

Braga as a city and region offers a rich, juicy and varied gastronomy. Because of the religiousness of the city, it is in the sweets where the greatest originality and refinement is found, and the long convent and popular tradition is visible. Among the traditional sweets of Braga can be emphasized the “Pudim Abade de Priscos”, the “Fatias Doces”, the “Viúvas” and the “Rabanadas do Convento”. – Pudim Abade de Priscos, or Pudim de Toucinho is a sweet of conventual origin from the end of the 19th century, by the abbot of Priscos, always present at a party table. Its characteristic consistency and appearance are the result of the bacon, and the taste of Port wine and cinnamon is also evident; – Sweet Slices (Fatias Doces) are cakes made from almonds, eggs and sugar, sprinkled with powdered sugar after being baked; – The Widows (Viúvas) originated in the old Convento dos Remédios, having a similar presentation to the pasteis de nata; – The Rabanadas do Convento comes from the Adaúfe Monastery, being characterized by being fried in the same syrup that surrounds them, made with honey, lemon, cinnamon and Port wine.
