Aveiro is a city about 70km south of Oporto and is known as "the Portuguese Venice" because it is bathed by the Ria de Aveiro where the Moliceiro boats sail. The Moliceiro is a boat that was collecting and transporting the moliço that grows in the Ria and which now makes guided tours for tourists.

Due to its geographic location, the salt production in the salt flats, naval trade and fishing have always been the great assets of Aveiro and have contributed to the settlement of the population throughout its history.

However, at the end of the 16th century the channel connecting the Ria to the sea was closed by force of the winds and tides, causing the stagnation of the waters and away to other areas a large part of the population. This situation lasted until the beginning of the 19th century, when works directed by the French engineer Reinaldo Oudinot and the Portuguese engineer Luis Gomes de Carvalho solved the problem and reopened the canal. Still, it was at this less good stage that one of the most important temples of Aveiro was built – the Igreja da Misericórdia.

In 1929 the city of Aveiro was classified as a Tourism Resort, and in 1973 the University was created, currently one of the most important in the country.

As far as gastronomy is concerned, despite the varied typical fish dishes, the ovos moles are the delicacy that represents Aveiro. The ovos moles de Aveiro are a traditional sweet of the region made of eggs and sugar, which began to be produced by the nuns of the Mosteiro de Jesus de Aveiro and it remains until today.

Among many other places, the Ria and the San Jacinto Dunes Nature Reserve are considered important points of interest in Aveiro.

Ovos Moles

The Ovos Moles are a conventual sweet typical of the Aveiro city that began to be confectioned about 500 years ago, in the 16th century. Thanks to the politics of the use of the convents, it was in the Convent of Jesus in Aveiro that this candy was first elaborated.

At a time when it was customary for people to donate chickens to the nuns, they would then pick up the eggs and always separate the egg yolks from the egg whites. The whites were used for ironing to the habits, while the gems, having a very short shelf life were used for the making of sweets.

In an attempt to prolong the time of preservation of the gems, one of the nuns of the Convent of Jesus decided to try to add sugar to the gems and realized that the more sugar was added, the longer the gems were preserved. In addition, from this junction resulted a very good sweet, thus beginning the history of Ovos Moles.

With the extinction of convents and religious orders in 1834, the recipe was perpetuated by the hand of the last nun and then spread to other hands.

By conventual influence, Ovos Moles are traditionally served in wafer with motives that refer to the Aveiro city and its proximity to the sea as shells, whelks or fish. In addition, they are also presented inside small wooden barrels painted by hand.

In wafer in barrels, the genuineness of Ovos Moles of Aveiro was recognized by the European Union, which gave it the name of Protected Geographical Indication. At the moment they are the ex-libris of Aveiro, being part of a list of conventual sweets that are served here.

Gastronomy

Leitão à Bairrada

Leitão à Bairrada

Named as one of the 7 Wonders of the Gastronomy of Portugal, this regional dish is one of the best known and appreciated not only in the Aveiro region but throughout the Country. This delicacy, which was once consumed on holidays, currently moves visitors and tourists to the experience of its tasting, being able to be appreciated in plate or in sandwiches. The Leitão à Bairrada can be eaten cold, but hot has more intense flavors. It should be stacked with the skin facing upwards to keep the crunchy texture, accompanied preferably with boiled potatoes and with orange slices.

Codfish

Codfish

Codfish is the king of Aveiro gastronomy, being closely linked to the history and daily life of the municipality. Cooked with a thousand and one forms, it is included in all the local menus, and also has a marked presence in the Costa Nova Fish Market. In his honor, is also celebrated the Cod Festival, in August in the Oudinot Garden, organized by the “Confraria Gastronómica do Bacalhau”. In Aveiro, in addition to the traditional recipes, it is still possible to taste the Codfish derivatives, which are not so usual to be found in national restaurants. “Samos”, “línguas”, faces and other parts of codfish are prepared in the good way of the traditional cuisine of the region.

Fish and Seafood

Fish and Seafood

The lovers of good food can delight in the traditional fish and seafood dishes that can be found in Aveiro. Some of the suggestions are the fish soup, the fish stew of the ria and the sea or the escabeche eels, the mussel satay or the lamprey rice. The Soup of Fish is a dish appreciated by all the country, but characteristic of the regions of the coast as it is the case of Aveiro. This soup, made with lots of fish in the area, is one of the main delicacies enjoyed in almost every restaurant. The fish stew of the ria and the sea is also one of the most appreciated dishes. In the Aveiro region, one of the most characteristic stew is that of Eels and Sprat, a very small sardine. With a seasonal availability, lamprey rice is also one of the traditional dishes of the Aveiro region. This rice, cooked with the lamprey blood, is one of the most typical dishes.

Pão-de-Ló de Ovar

Pão-de-Ló de Ovar

Pão-deLó from Ovar is a sweet typical of the region of Aveiro, whose history is more than three centuries old. At the moment it is obligatory presence at the table of many Portuguese, mainly in consonant and other festivities. This differentiates itself from the traditional bread loaf by its lower shape and its moist and creamy texture that is conferred by soft eggs and the shortest cooking time. One particularity of this candy is that to prove it, a spoon may be necessary.

Traditional Sweets

Traditional Sweets

The Aveiro region, besides presenting a great variety of traditional dishes of fish and meat, is known for the richness and diversity of its conventual sweets, where they stand out the Ovos Moles, the Castanhas de Ovos or the Raivas. The Ovos Moles are considered the ex libris of Aveiro and have a convent origin. They consist of egg yolks and sugar, wrapped in a kind of wafer with shells and others marine formats. The Castanhas de Ovos (Egg Chestnuts) are sweet little chestnuts, with a more consistent pasty texture. They are made with the sweet of eggs and almond, shaped like nuts and browned in a flame (without burning). The Raivas (rabies) already have a tradition of manufacture with more than 200 years. Made with flour, eggs, butter and sugar, its characteristic shape resembles an awkward flower.

Santa Joana Princess

Joana de Portugal, born in Lisbon at the beginning of 1452, was also known as Santa Joana Princess. Daughter of King D. Afonso V and Queen D. Isabel, was a Portuguese princess of the house of Aviz. Although the princess took the position of regent of the kingdom, from having been Crown Princess until the birth of her brother and future King John II, and being considered very beautiful, the princess seemed to reject the earthly goods, vehemently rejecting any proposal of marriage and exchanging parties and meetings for the seclusion of prayer. In 1475 he entered the monastic life of the Convent of Jesus in Aveiro, where he lived until his death in 1490, at the age of 38. As a royal princess and potential heir to the throne, D. Joana never professed the vows of a Dominican nun, but she always followed the rules of life and the style of the nuns of the convent. She was buried in the choir of the monastery church where years later she was ordered to build a tomb of ebony and bronze. The Princess was beatified on the papacy of Innocent II more than 200 years after her death, and already in the second half of the 20th century the Princess was declared protector of the city of Aveiro by Pope Paul VI.
