Of Arab origin, the word Arrábida means "place of prayer". Serra da Arrábida, located about 40 km from Lisbon, is one of the natural areas of Mediterranean influence on the Portuguese coast with the most breathtaking scenery. Its beauty is incomparable, with the blue of the sea alternating with the whitish shades of the limestone cliffs and with the green of the vegetable cover of the mountain range. The highest point is in the Serra do Risco, a 380m high cliff that plunges over the sea and from where you can enjoy a magnificent panoramic view over the Atlantic.

The meeting of the mountains with the sea gave rise to a cordon of beaches of fine sand and transparent waters, which invite visitors for a summer holiday. Highlight for Meco Beach, Figueirinha, Galapos and Galapinhos and still the Portinho da Arrábida, besides others more secret and practically unknown. At the level of marine ecosystems, Professor Luiz Saldanha Marine Park is an area of high biodiversity, without similar at European level.

Arrábida also has excellent conditions for some traditional economic activities, such as agriculture, pastoralism and artisanal fishing. Since ancient times, it has been practiced the cultivation of the vineyard, which, due to the adequate soil conditions, allows the production of the well-known Moscatel de Setúbal grape variety (Palmela and Setúbal). The production of the Azeitão Cheese from raw sheep’s milk (Setúbal, Sesimbra and Palmela) is another activity, constituting a protected designation of origin.

The heritage wealth of the region is affirmed, not only through material cultural heritage, like several real estate, monuments and places of public interest, but also through intangible cultural heritage, such as handicrafts, fairs, festivals and pilgrimages that happen a little by all municipalities.

In the region of Arrábida there is also a taste of fish and seafood with a unique flavor, and traditional confectionery combined with the magnificent wines that allow an authentic trip to the world of flavors.

Ridge

It is in the Serra da Arrábida that the Parque Natural da Arrábida is located. It covers an area of approximately 17,000 ha (of which about 5,000 are of marine surface), in an area that extends for about 35 km long and 6 km wide, going from Setúbal to Palmela, Vila Nova de Azeitão, Sesimbra and Cabo Espichel.

Created in 1976 in order to preserve and protect the natural geological, flora, fauna, landscape, cultural and historical values of the place, the Park owes its name to the main geomorphological unit of the whole area – the Arrábida mountain range. It comprises the group formed by the Arrabida, S. Luís, Gaiteiros, S. Francisco and Louro Mountains.

Located by the sea, this natural park is endowed with an incomparable beauty of color – the blue of the sea in alliance with the whitish shades of limestone cliffs and the sands of the beaches, and with the green vegetation of the mountain range. Its privileged location, together with geological and climatic factors, allows you to find some rare animal and plant species, such as the Bonelli’s Eagle and the Bat-of-Plush.

In addition to several hiking trails, Serra da Arrábida also has Professor Luiz Saldanha Marine Park. Enjoy to visit the Oceanographic Museum, located in the Fortaleza de Santa Maria da Arrábida, which has a collection with aquariums with some examples of fauna and flora of these waters.

The Parque Natural da Arrábida can be visited at any time of the year. However, spring and autumn are the seasons that provide landscapes with more colors.

Gastronomy

Caldeirada de Sesimbra

Caldeirada de Sesimbra

The Caldeirada de Sesimbra is a reference in the local gastronomy, being a dish that brings together a great variety of fish. Tamboril, safio, tremelga, sardinhas and pata-roxa (or caneja as it is known in Sesimbra) are the indispensable fish in this Caldeirada “À Pescador”. This Caldeirada has some characteristics of its own, for example, the ingredients are arranged in overlapping layers, the bivalves being in the bottom to prevent it from catching; through the broth is made the fish mass; and the stew is never stirred, only stirs the pan.

Fish and Seafood

Fish and Seafood

The coastal region of Arrábida is renowned for gastronomy based on fish dishes, whether fried, grilled or cooked. Like the grilled sardines, the cuttlefish is also recognized as a delicacy. There are few restaurants in Setúbal, for example, that do not include it in their menus, to be tasted at any time of the day, whether it is in sandwiches or on the plate, or at lunch or dinner, or even as a snack. Other fish such as mullet, sea bass or mackerel are also very characteristic. Another of the ex-libris are the oysters. Whether it’s natural or in a more elaborate recipe, oysters mark, more and more, presence in the gastronomy not only of Setúbal, but also of the region. The açorda is also a dish very appreciated by the quality of the fish and the seafood. Made with clams, cockles, prawns, eggs, bread and spices, it is an irresistibly delicious dish.

Farinha Torrada

Farinha Torrada

The origin of the Farinha Torrada (Toasted Flour) dates back to the end of the 19th century, when it was used as a home remedy. This sweet had the property of serving as a kind of medicine, used against colds and persistent cough, probably because of its high caloric value. For being tasty and nutritious, made with yellow sugar, eggs, flour, chocolate and lemon zest, he was often called energy food. For a long time it was taken by the fishermen to the sea to feed during the work. Being a quality product, it quickly became a characteristic sweet, present in any local pastries.

Honey

Honey

Apiculture finds the perfect conditions in the region of Arrábida to achieve a quality product, especially with the abundance of aromatic plants, combined with the temperate nature of the winters. With a velvety and very characteristic flavor, it is possible to find Mel da Arrábida with rosemary, spice, thyme, gorse and hangman flavor, among others.

People

Bocage (1765-1805)

Bocage (1765-1805)

Manuel Maria Barbosa du Bocage, born in 1765 in Setúbal, is considered the most important Portuguese poet of the 18th century. Representative of the Lusitanian style literary movement, it was a figure that was inserted in a period of transition from the classic style to the romantic style that predominated in the 19th century. Although much of his life remains a mystery, it is known that he began to compose poems from the age of eight. At the age of 14 he goes to the Royal Navy Academy, passing through Brazil, India and Goa, returning to Lisbon at the age of 25. The following years in Lisbon were of great literary production, but also of greater bohemia with an unregulated life between taverns and literary ‘tertúlias’. Under the pseudonym of Elmano Sadino he joined the Academy of Fine Arts or New Arcadia, but their relations were not peaceful. He was arrested by the Inquisition, and in jail he translated French and Latin poets. His poetry has undergone changes throughout his life, depending on his experiences. From eroticism to bohemian life, from constructive criticism to scorn, Bocage wrote about everything, and has therefore been the subject of countless criticisms and censorship throughout his life. He died in Lisbon in 1805, victim of an aneurism.

Luísa Todi (1753-1833)

Luísa Todi (1753-1833)

Born in Setúbal in 1753, Luísa Rosa de Aguiar was one of the greatest Portuguese lyrical artists of the 18th century. He began his career at age 14 in musical theater, having sung several comic operas with his older sister, Cecília Rosa de Aguiar. At the age of 16 he married the Italian violinist Francesco Saverio Todi, of whom he had six children and received the surname Todi. Encouraged by her husband, she perfected her singing skills, debuting at the Portuguese royal court in the reign of D. Maria I, and extending her lyric career internationally. Luísa Todi had an unusual ability to sing with the greatest perfection and expression in several languages (French, English, Italian and German), having been considered the most famous half-soprano of all time. In 1799, in Naples, he decided to finish his career and return to Portugal. After her husband’s death in 1803 in Porto, Luísa Todi never left her mourning, and she still lost her jewelry during the tragic accident of the Ponte das Barcas in the French invasions. From 1811 he lived in Lisbon, where he died of a stroke and was completely blind in 1833. In his hometown, in Setúbal, in his honor we can now find the Municipal Forum Luísa Todi, and still one of the main arteries with its name, Avenida Luísa Todi.
